Facts
- Free allowance
- 2 GB storage · unlock 5 GB
- Plan limits
- Complete 3 welcome tasks within 30 days · password-protected links
- Storage
- Guaranteed 2 GB Drive storage initially, increased permanently to 5 GB when welcome tasks completed within 30 days. Separate Proton Mail allocation should not be conflated with Drive.
- Account
- Free Proton account. No paid subscription required; payment card requirement for ordinary Free signup not independently established.
- Retention
- Free accounts may be deleted after more than 12 months inactive; sign in and use a Proton service at least annually. Account deletion permanently removes stored files.
- Custom domain
- Proton-managed share URLs. User custom-domain attachment and domain registration not included in verified Free benefits.
- Password protection
- Free file/folder viewer links support owner-set passwords and optional expiration. This protects shared files, not a hosted application.
- Billing
- Continuing Proton Free tier, no file-storage overage charges were verified; exceeding space requires reducing stored files or moving to paid tier. No introductory compute credits or trial dependence.
- Execution
- Managed encrypted file storage and browser-accessible viewer/editor share links; no arbitrary user code execution.
Worth knowing
The marketed 5 GB requires completing tasks during the first 30 days. This is file/document sharing, not website or API hosting. Use the account at least annually to avoid inactive-account deletion. Official CLI exists, but Free-plan CLI entitlement is not verified.
